Walls

© 2001 - Steven and Catherine Brown

So many hurting people, I see them every day.

Yet they try to hide their pain behind a mask.

When I ask them how they are, they just smile and quickly say

I'm doing fine, but it's nice of you to ask

Sometimes don't you wish we could reach beyond the veil,

through the walls we have built around our heart.

Upon these walls are vines and hedges,

with thorns of pain from yesterday,

there to guard a life which once was torn apart.

If we could let ourselves be loved, if we could give our love away,

If we’d take a chance and open up our heart to you,

Then we could reach out with the love of God today.

We’re all born in the darkness, reaching for the light,

Grasping at the silhouettes of truth.

And we try to fill the void with all the pleasures of this world,

All the while, some will waste away their youth.

Sometimes don't you wish we could reach beyond the veil,

through the walls we have built around our heart.

Upon these walls are vines and hedges,

with thorns of pain from yesterday,

there to guard a life which once was torn apart.

If we could let ourselves be loved, if we could give our love away,

If we’d take a chance and open up our heart to you,

we could reach out with the love of God today.

But when true love is introduced into a thirsty soul and mind,

with time the thorns will slowly fade away.

Then God can chip away the mortar

that holds the stubborn wall in place,

and one by one, the stones will fall, till we can say:

I can let myself be loved. I can give my love away.

I can take a chance and open up my heart to you.

I can reach out with the love of God today.

I can take a chance and open up my heart to you.

I can reach out with the love of God today.
